Port Fees and Diver Taxes
A true tale or my name ain't Paul Bunyan
|
Most of you know there is an additional $65 per person port tax charged whenever you take a boat, and Palau has established a $15 dive tax for boats operating out of
Koror. Even though we have to pay this to PHD with the invoice, none of you got
charged for it. Why, you might ask.
It's a long story.
A long time ago, in a place far, far away, a group of cyberdivers went on a trip to
the Red Sea. On the way they were accosted by the evil troll Jergen, who waylaid
them and made them wander around in taxis all over Egypt for 40 hours. Then they
had to swim to their ark, because it had already left port with all the other
animals.
Undismayed, the hero of this saga, Michael Luttrell, a.k.a. Warmfloor to all his
friends, returned from the trip and laid the Grip on the evil Jergen. Having
faced down the Wicked Witch Amy Slate, and the Little Waitresses from Hell at
Manatee Matties, Warmfloor went to work with vigor. The troll Jergen, being in
fear of his life, gave up some denari to Michael.
As some of you know, Warmfloor then took an Oddesy off to Syria, in search of Noah's
Ark and other fabled Items of Lore. He didn't find any, but the Syrians, being
tired of cold floors, welcomed him openly. Since he had a few denari in his
pocket, he set up a local Warmfloor franchise, and the rest is history.
Being an honourable man, as well as fantastically wealthy, when he saw the
cyberdive setting up for Palau, he sent a bag of money ($1500) to the club to be
used as we see fit for the upcoming dive. Alfred and I, decided, long ago, that
since we didn't know who was going yet, the only equitable way to split the money,
other than taking a trip to Syria ourselves (not high on the list) was to use it to
pay everyone's port and dive taxes. 16 x $90 = $1440. That way who every made
the trip benefited, without knowing until the final bill came due, so it didn't
affect their decision one way or another.
And now we know.
Thanks, Warmfloor!
